After an overnight flight to Lisbon, we took a 1.5 hour flight to the island of Madeira which is off the coast of Northern Africa. Madeira is known for thousands of miles of trails, delicious wine, lush landscapes, and fruit that rivals Brazil or Southeast Asia. Portuguese explorer João Zarco wrote about Madeira in 1419, but there are some records that indicate the Romans were aware of the island.

We got settled in our Air B & B, then walked down to the "old town" in the capital, Funchal. We had a wonderful dinner that included for some of us, a Madeira specialty, black scabbard fish. It was delicious!
After our meal, we bought some fruit at a fruit stand for the next morning before heading back to get some sleep.
